Australian screenwriter Elizabeth H. Vu, renowned for her work Perception (2018), Echo 8 (2023) been commissioned by the Arts & Cultural Exchange (ACE) in association with Phoenix Eye Films to develop the psychological horror feature film 'Midnight Never Sleeps' (Đêm Không Ngủ).
This collaboration stems from ACE's support of the international table reading of the independent action thriller 'Five By Five' and 'Echo 8 Beyond,' led by Maria Tran earlier this year. The successful reading involved over 30 actors and filmmakers across the US, Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia, that was sparked by the creation of two scripts by Vu within an impressive three-week timeframe.
Maria Tran, a key player in the collaboration, expresses her admiration for Vu, describing her as a "prolific writer" and a hidden gem in the Australian film industry. Tran emphasizes Vu's dedication to her craft, regardless of commission status.
ACE and Phoenix Eye Films are pooling their resources to support Elizabeth H. Vu in the development of 'Midnight Never Sleeps,' an original concept by the screenwriter herself. ACE will provide the necessary backing and resources to Vu for the creation of key story materials, propelling the feature film towards production.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the project, Vu remarks, "I'm looking forward to realizing this project, especially crafting a story that has so much cultural relevancy to the Vietnamese community of Australia. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary, and seeing more stories from this diaspora makes me proud to be who I am."
